One number per game

It comes from how close the game was, how it ended, comebacks, star nights, flow, stakes and defense. A blowout stays low however big the names are; a game that goes to the wire climbs.

So you can skip the 4s, and never miss a 9.

9.0 Instant classic and up
8.0 Must watch and up
6.5 Strong replay and up
5.0 Solid watch and up
3.5 Only for fans and up
3.4 Skip / background and below

No spoilers until you ask

Scores, winners, the box score and even the reasons behind a rating stay covered. You uncover them one game at a time, when you have watched it or decided not to.

The list itself never shows a result. It is safe to open the morning after.

Nothing opens by itself. When you want to see it, one tap shows the result, the reasons behind the rating and the full box score, starters first.

A game in the HoopRate app, Minnesota at Denver rated 9.6: the rating is shown, the result stays hidden behind a button labelled Show result.

Tune the rating to your taste

The rating weighs seven things: how close the game was, the finish, comebacks, star nights, flow, stakes and defense. You decide how much each one counts.

Love a defensive grind? Turn defense up and those games climb. Only here for the big scoring nights? Turn star impact up instead. Every game is re-rated as you move a slider, and each day is ranked by your number.

Four presets get you started: Defense first, Drama first, Star watcher and Highlight reel. The neutral rating never changes and stays on each game’s page, right under yours. All of it comes with a free account.

The taste settings in the HoopRate app: the five presets and a Custom chip, above one slider for each of the seven criteria.

Make it yours, if you like

The app works without an account. A free one adds four things.

Their games lead each day and carry a star.
Your own rating
Weigh drama, stars or defense your way, and every game is re-rated for you.
Keep track
Mark games as seen and hide them from the list.
Save for later
A tap, or a swipe on the row, puts a game on your watchlist.

Share a game, not the score

Every game has a card with its rating and nothing else. Send it to the group chat the morning after, and nobody learns who won until they want to.
